English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS)

NEAS Australia

The Ivanhoe International ELICOS Centre offers a program of intensive English instruction fully accredited by the National English Language Teaching Accreditation Scheme (NEAS).

The Program provides English instruction for students from non-English speaking backgrounds (usually international students) who have not yet achieved a sufficient level of English proficiency to cope adequately with mainstream study.  Students’ English needs are assessed on arrival and recommendations are made as to the length of time to be spent in ELICOS.  This varies from 10 weeks, for students close to Intermediate level, to 40 weeks for students at Pre Elementary levels.

ELICOS classes are part of the normal School timetable and as well as specific English classes being taught by ESL qualified teachers, other specific subjects are also included (taught by mainstream teachers).  Assemblies and Pastoral Periods are also part of the ELICOS program.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Once adequate levels of English have been reached, students progress to mainstream classes and study English as a Second Language (ESL) as a subject. In addition, our very experienced ESL teachers provide support in other subjects.
