Democracy

“We acknowledge the diversity of voices within our community and grant each individual the encouragement and freedom to be heard.” Ivanhoe Grammar School Strategic and Action Plan 2011-2015

Democracy requires dialogue. This means learning to argue, articulate beliefs, deliberate and come to collective decisions concerning what constitutes the good at school and beyond.  Democratic participation is essential to Round Square Schools.  Model United Nations Conferences and Simulations at Year 10 provide opportunities for democratic participation that develop skills in diplomacy, negotiation and compromise.

Teaching students both the values of democracy and the importance of active participation in democracy is essential to Round Square schools. Freedom of thought and speech is greatly encouraged and appropriate forums and channels of communication are set in place.

Examples of activities that promote democratic participation:

  • Membership and active participation within a political or social organisation that is committed to collective action, such as Amnesty or‘Get Up’
  • Active and demonstrated commitment to collective action in the pursuit of a particular issue or ideal, such as membership of an action group
