SOS Cafe
22 Aug 2011
This year a group of Plenty Campus students formed the 'Don't Hang the Rangs' to help protect the endangered Sumatran Orang-utan from extinction.
Their efforts have included raising awareness in the community to the plight of the species and the links to rainforest destruction and the production of palm oil. The students have also been raising funds to contribute to efforts in saving the natural habitat of the Sumatran Orang-utan, working in partnership with the Sumatran Orangutan Society (SOS).
As part of this fundraising effort the 'Don't Hang the Rangs' group held a SOS Cafe for students where they could buy cupcakes, sweets and biscuits. There was a special twist to the items on sale with all items relating to the group's soft toy Sumatran Orang-utan mascots Cocoa and Banana.
Overall the event was a big success with over $900 being raised that will go towards planting 600 trees in the Sumatran rainforest.
The Sumatran Orang-utan is listed as one of the world's 25 most endangered primates by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. They are only found on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia and it is estimated that only 7,300 still live in the wild.
